Bungaroosh • Milton Hide (HOWDY5)
I’m sure most readers in our region will know the duo Jim Tipler and Jo Church from East Sussex who together are Milton Hide. I think they have appeared at most folk clubs and festivals in the area at least once, and this is their third album. Jim and Jo are singer songwriters and this albums features 13 more of their songs plus a surprise track at the end. The title track Bungaroosh refers to a traditional building method common in the Brighton and Hove area based on using any available rubble and covering it with a layer of lime mortar. In Kent the equivalent would probably have been lath and plater, a thin layer of wood covered in plaster. Instrumentation on the album includes clarinet, guitar, piano and banjo, plus a bit of double bass and mandolin but the vocals are always clear and prominent. There is also a fold out A3 insert that contains all the words to the songs. The album is well worth a listen and it is always worth seeing Milton Hide live when you have the opportunity.
